The surveys provide evidence for a vanished landscape, showing estates, buildings and fields which no longer survive and providing evidence for agricultural practises which have long disappeared. William Figg the younger was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and preserved early maps iof East Sussex in large numbers. Some of the finest of this collection were drawn by Thomas Fulljames of Orpington for the estates of the Duke of Dorset at Hartfield and Withyham in 1791
