Scott's account of the rediscovery of the Scottish Regalia, which were sealed up in 1707 by order of the Treasury Commissioners, and kept in a chest in the Crown Room of Edinburgh Castle, lest the sight of them should inspire separatist sentiment. It was deemed safe to open the chest in 1818, and this rare first edition was written by Scott as a guide to an exhibition of its contents.
