Manuscript deeds and charters from the Crackenthorpe family of Newbiggin

Collection contains 20 charters granting lands in and around Kirkby Thore to the Cistercian Abbey of Holm Cultram and 22 medieval deeds c oncerning land transactions in the Newbiggin, Temple Sowerby and Ousby districts. There are 16th century royal charters for lands bought after the Dissolution and a Papal Bull of Adrian VI authorising George Crackenthorpe to hold more than one benefice. Amongst miscellaneous papers for the 18th and 19th centuries is a letter from Wordsworth to William Crackenthorpe in 1818, about his (Cs) proposed parliamentary candidacy. The last of the Crackenthorpe line, Dorothy married William Cookso, Wordsworths grandfather
