44 volumes of manuscript journal, copies of 160 official documents and 13 bundles of private letters. The major part of the journals concern Nicholls four periods of service in India. He took part in major campaigns during each of them and was Commander-in-Chief, India, during the first Afghan War. The collection is a major resource for students of the period of British expansion in India
