76 page notebook, diary entries from 5th September to 12 October 1854 with sketches and diagrams showing troop positions and orders of march. A detailed account of the early stages of the Crimean War, especially the Battle of the Alma. Nolan carried the fatal message from Lord Ragland to Lord Lucan and was the first man to die in the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava October 1854
