Copes own assemblage of evidence to be used in his defence at the Board of Enquiry which met to investigate the disastrous engagement with the Jacobite army at Prestonpans, of which he had been the General Officer commanding. The Enquiry absolved him of all blame for the defeat and the cowardice of the dragoons in the face of the Highland charge
