The deed of exchange and its accompanying maps document the consolidation of the estates respectively of Sir Francis Burdett, 5th Bt. (1770-1844) of Foremark, the reformist politician, and Sir George Crewe (formerly Harpur), 8th Baronet (1795-1844) of Calke. The first map shows the properties formerly owned by Burdett now transferred to Crewe and includes lands in Ticknall and Repton, as well as Ticknall Lime Works. The second map shows the Crewe holdings transferred in exchange to Burdett including lands in Stanton by Bridge, Milton and Repton. More than 1,800 acres of land are recorded, with schedules noting field names and tenants’ names. No copy of the deed has survived in the extensive archives of the Harpur Crewe and Burdett families in Derbyshire Record Office.
