Five volumes of letters received from ministers and a letter book 1656-69; they provide many insights into a soldier, politician, diplomat and naval commander who moved from one side to the other of the political divide. The papers are most interesting from the time of the Restoration, with several major letters from Samuel Pepys warning of the threat of the Dutch fleet and a letter from George Monk to Montagu asking him to provide Charles II with a ship to bring him to England. Montagus own decision to persuade the fleet to support the king resulted in his being rewarded with the earldom
