Seven of the eight letters known from Whaley to Walpole. Whaley was sevenyears Walpoles senior and preceded him at Eton and at Kings College Cambridge, where he became Walpoles tutor for part of the latters time at Univeristy. Five of the letters date from this period. Four were written during Whaleys Summer Tour to the Peak District in 1735
