Lockhart is best remembered today as the biographer of Scott and for his biting attacks on the poetry of Leigh Hunt and Keats in Blackwoods Magazine, but in his youth he was also a spirited caricaturist, papering the walls of his rooms at Oxford with sketches of his friends and foes.

3,000 volumes, comprising Webbs collection of Puffin and other childrens books and reference works.

As well as the usual estate manuscript deeds and accounts the collection includes documents relating to the remodelling of Cusworth Hall by James Paine and the design of the gardens by Richard Woods. The price given is for the entire archive that had been split between Leeds City Archives, Cusworth Hall Museum and Doncaster District Council.

Together with the usual rentals, accounts and plans for the familys estates, there are diaries and correspondence of family members.

Manuscript journals of a journey to Vienna in 1851 and a journey to Palermo in 1868. The former includes autograph letters from Herbert Minton, Coles travelling companion as well as maps, ephemera, bills and receipts. The Palermo volume also includes two resulting pamphlet publications and two gouache drawings.

One of only two multi-volume works known to have been bound by Scott, arguably the finest bookbinder ever to have worked in Scotland. Each volume is uniformly bound in Scotts early red morocco style, with the monogram tooled in gold on a green morocco oval onlay surrounded by an oval tool made up of 49 small shells

Includes letters from Blanche Patch, Shaws secretary and Charlotte Shaw. In 1929 Shaw and Barry founded the Malvern festival and the correspondence contains a detailed discussion of the staging of Shaws plays. There is also correspondence from the period 1946 - 48 when Barry was Director of the Stratford Festival.

A topographical and historical survey of Switzerland and adjoining regions, unusually in duodecimo format with 1090 pages and 109 plates, many folded. No copy listed in the NUC or the Gesamtverzeichnis des deutschen Schrifttums 1700 - 1910. Total price given is in DM, not sterling

Gillies was an impecunious editor, minor poet and translator who lived in Edinburgh 1788 - 1858.

An official record of the parliament held at Westminster between 13th January and about 11th February 1352. It is independent of the main formal parliament roll, held at PRO (ref C65/15), but apparently in an official Chancery hand. It includes the same business in a different order and sometimes in different words.

First produced about 1722, this is a set of vocal and orchestral parts, copied in part by James Lewis on 13th February 1758, whose annotations reveal them to have been used at the last recorded performance on 28th December 1786.

Bought to reunite with the rest of the Bibliotheck of Kirkwall now held at Aberdeen University Library. Bequeathed to the town of Kirkwall in 1683 by William Baikie , the 160 volumes became one of the earliest public libraries in Scotland. The older books were disposed of in 1891 and bought by James B.

Bound with Fitzherberts Surveyinge, 1546 nad A Treatise of householde, 1534, a translation of Xenophons Oeconomicus by Gentian Hervet. The three works, each complementing the other, singly represent almost the earliest printed texts on agriculture and land management in the English language.
